The goal of The Ashram That Isn't is to create a sustainable farming community that focuses on self reflection, inquiry, personal growth and development, as well as getting off the grid as much as possible. It follows no religious dogma and is open to humans, and animals, of all walks of life. Every guest must add value to the greater good of others and to the community as a whole.
The system in which we live has failed many of us. As a society we lack a sense of community, human connection, and true support for personal development. Some of us can see that and some of us feel in our depths that something is wrong with the outside world, yet we can’t quite put our finger on it. The Ashram That Isn't is a place where this will be our central point of focus as a community: to sustain and support our selves while reconnecting to our symbiosis with nature that we so deeply crave, consciously or not.
We will be both a yoga school and a farm. We will work the land, tend to the gardens and animals too, all while maintaining a twice daily yoga practice. The ashram will always be open to guests, short or long term, as well as running regular retreats and trainings allowing many possibilities for anyone wanting to stay for a peaceful farming and retreat experience.
...the time for change is now!
Traditionally speaking ashrams are spiritual communities that support one another along the path of self realisation. In my experience they all tend to have a cult like vibe to them, as can many schools of yoga, and that's something that you won't find here.
We strive to be an inclusive and open minded community of seekers that live harmoniously with nature, and as simply as possible, to reduce the distractions of the mind to make our personal yoga practice more fruitful.
Personally, I want a peaceful place in the countryside to be able to work, study, go into isolation, and practice. You're welcome to do the same. Also, my work has taken me to a place where my role as a teacher is to create environments where people can confront their ego or do nothing at all. I see this project as being a space to continue that on a much larger scale.
Real growth requires confrontation, not placating to everyone’s own wants and desires. Residents and guests need to adapt, adjust, and accommodate to the community, not the other way around.
This is a spiritual community first, not a personal residence. The difference is that in a spiritual community you’re looking at your shit and not simply trying to solve everyone’s individual emotional baggage in a social dynamic. You must go deeper than that, and our role at the farm is to facilitate that space for ourselves and others.
What to expect
Though we follow no dogma, guru, lineage, discipline, religion, or celestial tea pots, there are some basic rules for the betterment of the farm, the flow of energy amongst the residents, and connecting to the community as a whole. Self reflection and living in a community are both hard work and require a certain level of discipline as well as very clear and strong communication.
There will be a twice daily yoga practice and all residents and guests must attend as well as actively serve the community, with no expectation of reward, for the duration of their stay. In yoga we call this karma yoga or selfless service, acting for the benefit of others and not from or for the ego or false sense of self.
There is no you, we are all the same, act accordingly. The community comes first, not your personal egoistic desires. We are here to learn and to experience this first hand and we, as a community, are the experience’s support network and facilitators for ourselves and each other.
Does this sound like a dream to you too?
We are currently a team of three, two yoga teachers and one musician and voice coach (all yogis), and open to finding another partner and family member to take a larger roll in our community. If you are looking to change your life, do something big, or just invest in something promising, feel free to reach out to us. The photos are of the farm we are currently in negotiations to purchase and it's located in the north of Sardinia, Italy.
Would you like to get involved?
We hope to be ready to host people by the end of summer, and will be starting off with just the basics. The farm has been under renovation and isn't quite yet finished. The main house will be used as a shared kitchen and bathroom and accommodation will be camping. So bring a tent and be ready to live a simple life with us. There will be a lot of work in the beginning so we will be in need of volunteers to help us get the place up and running. Of course there will also be group meals and yoga practice every day. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in reach out to us as well.
Jason has been on the yoga path for two decades now. His interest started with meditation when he was a teenager which led him to his own self created yoga practice at home. Not happy with what he found in books he decided to go to India and study at the source. There the real inward journey began. Knowing that not everyone is on a spiritual path, but everyone can benefit from yoga, he decided to create a space where yoga is made accessible for everyone. No dogma, just yoga. We are all free to find what we need from yoga whether its relief from stress or pain or just a way to ease your mind. Jason also offers Yoga Coaching. If you want to go further, all you need to do is ask. Otherwise, just enjoy the mat. More about Jason >>
