A Community House and Retreat Centre

L’Altra Riva

After many years our dream project has become a reality. Its name is L’altra Riva, which means ‘The other side’ in Italian. We sit in the center of a tiny hamlet, in the Apennines mountains in northern Italy between Bologna and Florence, called Rocca Corneta. Named after the 4th century tower that you see in the top photo. This is the view from the dining room, yoga shala and several guest rooms. The lower photo is the building itself. It’s in the process of getting a facelift but it’s a beautiful canvas to work with.

Our mission is to become a part of this rural farming community, which we are in the process of doing now. We are re inventing this old hotel and restaurant into a place that is not only a sister to our You Can Yoga school but will also operate as a bakery, cafe, hotel, restaurant and community space for the local community. We will also offer regional food, hiking trips, excursions, and yoga retreats. Like our schools, L’Altra Riva will follow no spiritual dogma and is open to humans from all walks of life. Every member will add value to the greater good of others and join and support the community as a whole.

The system in which we live has let down many of us on some level. As a society, we seem to lack a sense of community, human connection, and authentic support for personal development. At L’Altra Riva this is the central point of focus for us as a community: to sustain and support ourselves while reconnecting to our symbiosis with each other and nature, which we so deeply crave, consciously or not. We provide space for anyone to join, short or long term, and become a part of something that allows them to have a closer look at themselves and what it means to be a part of something bigger that supports your own personal development at the same time, like a contemporary ashram. Or you can just do yoga and read books by the river.

Where we are now…

We are ready to begin hosting guests from this summer. We had a wonderful summer this past year having friends and family around to help us test the place out and get some of the rough work done together. Though, like life, the place will always be a work in progress but we are ready to share the experience of L’Altra Riva with you.

We are offering different ways to be a guest on a donation base. We still need help with things around the building and garden so expect a busy active community life. We are also open to full time work exchange if you’re interested. Come be a part of it with us this summer or just take a well deserved break in the mountains.

All donations include accommodation, group meals, and yoga classes. Jason, and other teachers, will be living, practicing and teaching yoga daily. Anything else you might want or need is up to you.

The arrangements we offer are suggestions and we are open to your own thoughts and ideas if you choose to come stay with us, short or long term.

The options we are offering for now, which are available when there are no retreats, are from June-Sep:

Full Time Karma Yogi – room and board is included, in a shared room, and you work full time with the house staff.

Karma Yogi – €15 per night, €95 per week, in a shared twin room and works with the staff, about 5 hours per day. We would like to take it easy too even though we’re getting work done. The work can be in the gardens, kitchen, cleaning, admin, running errands, or however you feel you could best serve the community.

Yin Yang, so half and half – €25 per night in a shared room, €45 for private. Helps the staff for a few hours per day.

Guest – €35 per night for a shared room and €55 for a private one. Do whatever you like while you’re there, just be nice.

The address is: Via Ca’ di Giannone, 36-37, 40042 Rocca Corneta BO, Italy

We are accessible by bus 776 from Porretta Terme once per day. It leaves the station around 14:00. You can get to Porretta Terme by train almost every hour from both Bologna and Florence. There is also parking if you drive or we can arrange a pick up solution at a near by village if necessary.

During the retreats you can expect yoga (asana and meditation) every morning and late afternoon. There will also be group discussions every evening about the philosophy of yoga and why we practice, over an optional glass of local wine of course. You are free to get involved with the staff while you are there or just spend the days hiking or chilling by the river between meals and yoga. Whatever feels right for you.

We are there to facilitate a proper yoga practice and share the experience of what it feels like to be at L’Altra Riva. You will be overwhelmed at how easy it is to just let go when you arrive there, whether you want to or not. Regardless of whether you’re doing yoga or just laying in the sun.

There will be retreats during the following weeks:

July 1st-7th & August 12th-18th

All rooms are doubles or twins with a private fresh water bathroom, shower and bidet. There is a shared bathroom with warm water if you need it. Remember, we are a work in progress.

The all inclusive rate is €995 per person for a private room and €750 for a shared double twin room.

This includes accommodation, all group meals, workshops and yoga classes.

Would you like to get involved?

We are also open to one more partner to join our team. If any of you have the dream yourself to be a part of something like this on a larger scale in your own life feel free to reach out to us. Jason would be happy to discuss the options and possibilities with you.
